Caring, compassionate and highly qualified people combined with state-of-the-art resources make Englewood Hospital and Medical Center a leader in healthcare. The Medical Center is world-renowned for its expertise in many areas, such as cardiac care the latest N.J. cardiac report card shows that Englewood is number one in cardiac bypass surgery. Other areas of excellence at Englewood Hospital include breast care, maternal/child health, oncology, and bloodless medicine and surgery. The Medical Center also is a leader in nursing. Not only has Englewood Hospital achieved the prestigious designation of a Magnet hospital in 2002, but it also has established an outstanding Bachelor of Science Nursing Program (BSN) that attracts students worldwide, and has implemented recruitment and retention programs that continue to build a strong nursing team.
Education and career development is woven into the fabric of Englewood Hospital’s Nursing Department. In 2003, the Medical Center received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which provided support to create a high school partnership. As a result, Englewood Hospital established the Bergenfield High School Nursing Apprenticeship Program, where students have an ongoing opportunity to experience first-hand nursing and structured clinical interactions with nurses at the Medical Center. Additionally, students have an opportunity to take advance placement courses with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and obtain college credits. Between 60-80 students are involved in this annual program, which offers students an edge in starting their college journeys.
Englewood Hospital and Medical Center has had a long history of nursing education. From 1896-1996, the institution had a diploma program that graduated many nurses and was recognized for its excellence. The Medical Center’s leaders acknowledged the increase in healthcare demands and need for RNs to take on clinical leadership and, subsequently, increased the number of BSN nurses.
In 1996, the Medical Center transitioned its nursing program to a BSN program by partnering with UMDNJ and Ramapo College in New Jersey. This collaborative model has proven to be a win-win for all three partners. Faculty has an opportunity to remain clinically connected, and students have exposure to three partners who excel in healthcare. UMDNJ provides the institutional framework for this program. The faculty at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center teach the nursing courses, which account for 66 credits. The science and general education courses are taught at Ramapo College. There are 129 total credits for the program, and students have an excellent pass rate on their NCLEX.
During transition from junior to senior year in college, students in this unique program can apply for an externship program at Englewood Hospital. This is a structured work-study program, whereby faculty provides educational programs. Students are paired with a staff nurse, and by the end of the summer, have an opportunity to increase their skills and knowledge. Many externs become interns after graduation and are hired by the Medical Center.
Upon completion of the four-year program at Englewood Hospital, many students stay connected to the Medical Center. Upon graduation, many students also continue in Englewood Hospital’s internship program, a unique curriculum managed by the faculty in which new individuals have an opportunity to transition from student to nurse with the faculty who taught them previously. This curriculum is an added benefit even for those who did not attend Englewood’s BSN program. New nurses are precepted by Englewood Hospital’s staff and faculty. And because it is a four-month program, new nurses have an opportunity to learn and grow under close supervision.
As a Magnet-designated hospital, Englewood Hospital also prides itself on creating a positive work environment for its nursing staff. Encouraging the professional and personal development of nurses is part of the hospital’s mission. It offers specialized programs for nurses that build individual careers and a strong workforce. There are support groups for new nurses, mentorship programs, and a program for nurses in practice 1-5 years. In fact, staff nurses can chart their career path through the institution’s competency-based model.
The nursing staff at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center is highly educated and shines among its peers. More than 65% of staff is either baccalaureate or masters prepared at the bedside, and the average experience of the Medical Center’s nursing staff is 17.2 years. Job satisfaction is a major factor in low employee turnover, and new nurses learn from ‘the best of the best.’
In a time of a nursing shortage, models that integrated practice and education are needed. Englewood Hospital and Medical Center is proud of its long tradition of nursing education and career development.
Englewood’s nurses actively contribute to the Medical Center’s vision and success in providing compassionate care in a humanistic environment. Each day, the nursing team provides top-quality care for patients and their families, exceeding expectations again and again.
