Inspired Leadership

At the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care, clinical practice is shaped by an unwavering commitment to patient care and breakthrough research that have changed how we diagnose and treat cancer.

“Here, researchers, physicians and caregivers are united in providing groundbreaking patient care while creating new knowledge and educating the next generation of physicians about cancer,” says Steven K. Libutti, MD, FACS, Director of the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care. Dr. Libutti leads the Center for Cancer Care and works
closely with Shalom Kalnicki, MD, and Roman Perez- Soler, MD. All three are internationally recognized for developing innovative strategies for cancer detection and

Patients First
The Center for Cancer Care is the focal point for collaborative cancer care across Montefiore and home to a new outpatient facility for multidisciplinary cancer care. Our clinical programs bring together disease- and organ-specific clinical and research teams to develop and identify the best diagnostics and deliver the optimal treatments.

Patients discuss therapy options with their clinical teams, as well as other subspecialists,
social workers and nutritionists.

The Patient Navigator program pairs patients with staff who manage the entire care process so patients can focus on getting well.

We provide targeted treatments for patients with both rare and common cancers including:

• Lung cancer
• Breast cancer
• Prostate and urologic cancers
• Colorectal cancer
• Pancreas and upper gastrointestinal cancers
• Endocrine and neuroendocrine cancers
• Gynecologic cancers
• Head and neck cancers
• Hepatobiliary cancers
• Melanoma
• Neurological cancers
• Sarcoma

“Montefiore has made significant investments in technologies that place us at the forefront of advanced surgical, medical, gynecological and radiation oncology treatments for common and rare cancers,” says Dr. Perez-Soler.

These technologies include:

• da Vinci Si surgical system
• Radiofrequency ablation
• Isolated organ and limb perfusion
• Respiratory gating for radiation therapy
• Calypso® Localization SystemTM, GPS for the Body®
• Varian TrueBeamTM System
• High-energy focused ultrasound for radio-recurrent cancer
• Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)
• Stereotactic body radiation therapy
• Transarterial chemoembolization

Extraordinary Research, Distinguished Care With more than 100 active clinical trials, the Center for Cancer Care leads in translational research focused on developing therapeutics that reduce toxicity and increase efficacy. Partnering with the internationally renownedAlbert Einstein Cancer Center, one of 66 National Cancer Institute–designated cancer centers in the United States, research clinicians currently explore orally administered and inhaled drugs, as well as molecularly targeted and genetically driven therapies. “We translate research into advanced patientcare
protocols, elevating the standard of care we provide to all our cancer patients,” says Dr. Kalnicki.

Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care is the first facility in the Northeast to provide a comprehensive range of “regional” chemotherapy treatments for patients with cancer that has advanced beyond surgical care but is still limited to an organ or region of the body. These treatments include, but are not limited to, regional perfusion therapy and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy.

We also participate in a consortium to develop New York City's first proton-beam cancer treatment center, a technique that dramatically reduces radiation toxicity, and we are the only academic medical center in the United States utilizing in clinical trials an implantable, biodegradable device that shields healthy tissue from radiation delivered to the prostate. Says Dr. Libutti, “Now is a time of extraordinary possibility in the field of cancer research and treatment, and our team at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care is dedicated to working tirelessly to improve cancer treatments andsurvival
outcomes, and enhance the quality of life of our patients with cancer.”
