NEW ROCHELLE – November 3, 2010 – Recently, Sound Shore Medical Center’s (SSMC) Department of Nursing hosted a day of education, featuring Nurse Practitioners’ research along with research projects from students at the Dorothea Hopfer School of Nursing.

At Sound Shore Medical Center, education is the cornerstone of the Department of Nursing. Continuing education ensures that staff is current on leading-edge practices, as well as advancements in equipment and technology. This latest in a series of educational opportunities provided SSMC’s Nurse Practitioners an opportunity to share their advanced knowledge and best practices with others. From oncology to bariatric presentations, more than 100 individuals acquired information on ten specialty practices.

The learning stations showcased research gleaned from Sound Shore Medical Center’s nine Nurse Practitioners. In addition, the educational event provided a stage for Hopfer students’ research as well as access to representatives from AMGEN, Novo Nordisk and Sanofi-Aventis, who provided information on their newest offerings in patient care. Following are the research topics and the presenters:

Palliative Extubation
Rose Anne Indelicato, RN, MSN, ANP-BC, ACHPN, OCN

Prevention of Recidivism for Admission of CHF
Louise Varca, RN, MSN, FNP-BC

Outpatient Management of Adult Diabetes
Maryanne Prior, RN, MSN, FNP

Anticoagulation in Total Joint Patients
Maria Rivera, RN, MSN, ANP

Obesity and CKD
Peggy Coll, RN, MSN, FNP-BC
Margie Katt, RN, MSN, FNP-BC Surgical NP
Roberta Wright, RN, MSN, FNP-BC

Pediatric Asthma
Janice Bistritz, RN, MSN, CPNP

Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy
Denise Byrd, RN, MSN, NP-BC, AOCNP

Not only did the participants have an opportunity to review best practices, but the comfortable, hands-on demonstrations encouraged questions and answers. So, those attending had time to benefit from the advanced nursing knowledge and student research. This is just one more example of SSMC ongoing efforts in nursing education.

Sound Shore Medical Center Nurse Practitioners’ Education Day was a successful event for the presenters, the participants and ultimately the patients. Learning, camaraderie and lunch proved to be a winning combination.
