HealthAlliance Hospital awarded thirty $3,000 scholarships at its annual Healthcare Career Opportunity Fund Scholarship Reception held last evening at the Wachusett Village Inn in Westminster. The scholarship recipients and their family members attended the event along with representatives of the HealthAlliance Hospital Board of Trustees, Golf Classic 2009 Committee, hospital donors, and the hospital’s management team.

The scholarships were made possible by proceeds garnered from the HealthAlliance Hospital Golf Classic, which netted over $160,000 last year. A total of $90,000 was earmarked for the scholarships and the remainder distributed to the hospital’s Simonds-Sinon Regional Cancer Center in Fitchburg.

The Healthcare Career Opportunity Fund is available for students who have a financial need and a demonstrated interest in the medical field. The Healthcare Career Opportunity Fund Scholarship Program is designed to provide scholarships to current students residing in the HealthAlliance Hospital service area including Ayer, Ashburnham, Ashby, Bolton, Clinton, Fitchburg, Gardner Groton, Harvard, Hubbardston, Lancaster, Leominster, Lunenburg, Pepperell, Princeton, Shirley, Sterling, Templeton, Townsend, Westminster, and Winchendon.

“This was a very competitive year with 85 students applying for these scholarships,” remarked Patrick L. Muldoon, HealthAlliance Hospital President and CEO. “These students are all amazing in their own right and share one common goal: their desire to give back to their community. The hospital understands the community’s need for great doctors, nurses, pharmacists, therapists and other healthcare professionals. The Opportunity Fund is one of the ways that the hospital contributes to meeting this need.”

For the past 18 years, the Golf Classic has raised over $1.3 million for the scholarship program. This year’s Golf Classic will be held on Monday, August 3 at The International in Bolton, Massachusetts. For more information, contact the hospital’s Development Office at 978-466-2270.
