NewYork-Presbyterian announced a series of community events available to the public in the month of March. From diabetes prevention to cooking classes and a “lunch and learn” series, many of this month’s events are focused on proper nutrition throughout NewYork-Presbyterian’s campuses in Westchester.

The following events are presented by NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital, 1980 Crompond Road, Cortlandt Manor, NY:

Sleep Disorders - No Rest for the Weary with Dr. Charles Abate
Thursday, March 9, 5:45 pm – 7:00 pm
Join Dr. Charles Abate, Medical Director of NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital’s Center for Sleep Medicine, to find out about the causes of sleep disorders, treatment options, signs and symptoms of sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, periodic limb movement disorder, restless leg syndrome, and insomnia. The lecture will include a complimentary sleep evaluation. Light refreshments will be served. NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital’s Center for Sleep Medicine is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Grab-and-Go Nutritious Bites
Thursday, March 9, 1:00-2:30 pm
In honor of National Nutrition month we will prepare nutritious snacks and meals that are easy to grab-and-go, ensuring that you fuel each day with supportive foods. Jodie Ferrari, Registered Dietician, will also be available to answer any of your nutrition questions or concerns.

“Lunch and Learn” Lecture: Diabetes and Nutrition with Dr. Himani Chandra
Thursday, March 16, Noon – 1:00 pm
Dr. Himani Chandra, an endocrinologist with NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Hudson Valley, will discuss the importance of a healthy eating plan for those with diabetes or pre-diabetes, and the link between eating excess calories and an undesirable rise in blood glucose. An overview of signs and symptoms of diabetes will also be shared. A complimentary light lunch will be served.

St. Patrick’s Day Cooking
Friday, March 17, Noon-1:30 pm
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a totally green menu! Featuring a green smoothie, savory green pancakes, green dipping sauces and green kale chips, this menu is chock full of vitamins and minerals— “a nutritious pot of gold.”

Total Diet Approach to Healthy Living

Join Jodie Ferrari, MS RD, CDN, in a class designed to help you learn to evaluate the nutritional value of your foods to give you a better understanding of healthy eating. Topics include portion control, planning and navigating the supermarket for healthier selections. A complimentary light lunch will be served.

Colon Health Community Fair
Thursday, March 23, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Participants will learn the important facts about colon health and colorectal cancer, warning signs and symptoms, recommended screenings, prevention and early detection, as well as treatment options and nutrition education. Light refreshments and giveaways will be available.

Plant Power: Anti-inflammatory Cooking
Friday, March 24, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
We will discuss root causes of inflammation and the various ways it manifest in the body. You will learn which foods to prioritize, and which to avoid, while cooking dishes that highlight anti-inflammatory ingredients such as turmeric, garlic, ginger, and cinnamon.
