Immediately after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Jewish Home Lifecare donated 300 mattresses to AFYA Foundation, which obtains and ships vital supplies to support medical and surgical needs worldwide. Jewish Homeis also looking into the feasibility of donating wheelchairs if they are needed or wanted – as the news coverage seems to indicate that money is what is most needed since shipments are difficult to organize.
In the way of financial aid, Jewish Home Lifecare Trustees donated $5000 to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee from the Fund for the Aged and the Home Care staff collected $500 within days to send to the American Red Cross with donations still pouring in. And at the three nursing home divisions in Manhattan, the Bronx and Westchester, staff are depositing cash in sealed donation boxes that will be opened after payday with those donations also delivered to the American Red Cross.
Tenants at Jewish Home’s Kittay House, an independent senior housing (Mitchell Lama 295 apartment complex) with services on Webb Avenue in the Bronx, collected $1100 and donations still coming in there as well. In addition. Jewish Home Lifecare’s medical staff and individual staff members are sending cash donations to Doctors Without Borders.
Needless to say, social workers are also providing counseling for staff members who have family in Haiti .Many of these efforts are modeled after Jewish Home Lifecare’s prompt response to the devastation left by hurricane Katrina.
