The New York State Chapter of the March of Dimes recently bestowed Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center with a Mission Triangle Award for the hospital’s unwavering commitment to improving newborn health – the mission of the March of Dimes. Dr. Edmund LaGamma, Chief, Division of Newborn Medicine received the award on behalf of the hospital. Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center is the advanced pediatric healthcare facility for New York’s Hudson Valley region. It is home to the area’s only Level IV (most sophisticated) neonatal intensive care unit and the Regional Neonatal Center. The hospital helps families from around the region through its strong relationship with Hudson Valley community hospitals, which transfer newborns from New York’s Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Sullivan and Ulster Counties, as well as Fairfield County, Connecticut.

“The March of Dimes and the Regional Neonatal Center at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital share a common mission: improving newborn health,” explained LaGamma. They are an exemplary organization that has made a big difference in the lives of so many babies. It is a tremendous honor to receive this award.”

“We are honored to have Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center help lead the way.” said Annette Trotta, Executive Director, March of Dimes, Northern Metro Division. “They are strong supporters of our March for Babies event, one of the most important ways we have of ensuring that we can continue our research and community programs that help more babies be born healthy,” she said.

About Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital

As the region’s neonatal center, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center cares for the area’s smallest and sickest newborns. In fact, more newborns weighing less than 1000 grams (less than 2.2 pounds) are treated at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center than almost any other facility in New York State. Even with this case severity, the survival and outcome statistics for the hospital rivals or exceeds those of the best medical centers in the United States. With the help of the doctors, nurses and other neonatal specialists on staff at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center over 80% of the infants between 600 and 700 grams (about 1.5 pounds) cared for at the hospital survive.
