Megan Bien, certified child life specialist at the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Med, hands patient Jayden Muniz, of Amsterdam, an ice cream sundae during an ice cream social hosted in early October by Make-A-Wish Northeast New York. The organization also provides therapeutic crafts at the Melodies Center and Pediatric Subspecialty Clinic during its monthly visits.
Representatives from Make-A-Wish Northeast New York recently visited the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Med to organize arts and crafts activities and host an ice cream social for the pediatric patients, their families and Albany Med staff.

Make-A-Wish Northeast New York staff spent the morning in the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders and Pediatric Subspecialty Clinic making decorative pillows and cheerful sun-catchers and coloring with young patients. In the afternoon, Make-A-Wish staff hosted an ice cream social in Camp Amedore, with the ice cream generously donated by Control Tower Ice Cream in Latham.

Caryn E. Anatriello, CCLS, director of mission delivery at Make-A-Wish Northeast New York, said the organization has partnered with Albany Med for the past two years, with monthly visits to provide therapeutic crafts and talks with families who may qualify for the program. Founded in 1987, Make-A-Wish Northeast New York serves eligible wish kids and their families by granting their heartfelt wish.

“Make-A-Wish Northeast New York truly values our relationship with Albany Med’s staff, patients and their families. The Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital accounts for more than 60 percent of our overall annual referrals,” said Anatriello.

Angie Silipigno, certified child life specialist at Albany Med’s Melodies Center, said pediatric patients and their families enjoy Make-A-Wish Northeast New York’s monthly visits.

“Parents appreciate Make-A-Wish providing our pediatric patients a brief distraction from their treatment sessions. And the kids simply love the opportunity to make fun, creative projects,” said Silipigno.
