Putnam resident, Paul Kerr, 90 year-old cardiopulmonary rehabilitation maintenance exercise group member, has been exercising at Day Kimball for over 25 years.
Day Kimball Healthcare’s Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Department recently celebrated Putnam’s Paul Kerr and his 25 years of heart health along with his 90th birthday. Kerr turned 90 on December 30, 2009 and has been working out at Day Kimball’s cardiac rehab facility for over 25 years.
“I come to Day Kimball’s rehab two to three times a week because I like the atmosphere and they take good care of me,” said Kerr. “My New Year’s resolution is to keep coming each week for years to come.”
Many years ago, Kerr’s primary care physician suggested he begin exercising at Day Kimball’s facility. He began working out three times a week and hasn’t stopped since. Kerr said, “When I began, the center had one bike and one treadmill. I have seen a lot of improvements over the years.” Today, Kerr is a member of the cardiac rehabilitation maintenance exercise group and generally works out on various machines for 30-40 minutes each time. The exercise as well as the social aspect of rehab is enjoyable to him. Although he is retired now, Kerr was previously an accounting and cost supervisor at Hale Manufacturing and worked at the facility from 1968 to 1987.
Day Kimball Healthcare’s Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Facility currently has 18 exercise machines and weight training equipment. Those involved in the maintenance program get their blood pressure and heart rate checked each time they come. Staff members are always available to answer questions about medications and nutrition and provide medical assessments as needed. Cardiac rehab staff will inform physicians if any issues arise for patients or group members. When patients have completed their physician-recommended program, anyone is welcome to work out in the facility as part of the rehab maintenance exercise group for a nominal fee. In any of the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs, staff members are always on site to monitor those who are exercising.
Be heart healthy! In recognition of American Heart Month, Day Kimball Healthcare’s four board-certified cardiologists remind you that good eating habits, regular exercise and annual check-ups are important for a healthy lifestyle.
